24-01-17, 08:22 AM
Hi page is a bit slow but I thought I would do a thread on the resto of my VL Group A been at it for about 18 months hopefully in the next three weeks it will get some paint on her. I have spent about 300 hours on her so far and my mate who is helping me only does top quality cars (three cars in top 60 at summernats so far) so am hoping for a great outcome. I hope photos work I am hopeless with computers

As you can see it is nearly ready for paint I will try and keep undates as I work on the car. The engine is coming out before it gets painted for a rebuild I am after about 350 horses can anybody help with the best combo to get this outcome? I am sure I will have some question along the way as this is my dream car and am trying to make it the best I can. Feel free to leave feedback and help me along the way.

Looks like a great job you're doing there.
Well the first engine "mod" I'd be doing is arranging for a Harrop stroker crank.

25-01-17, 01:00 PM
Thanks for reply PGB005 stroker is the way to go I know but I do not want to modify the block so I am going to stay with thr standard crankshaft .

25-01-17, 05:26 PM
what I've done with my VK Group A is I bought a late model roller block and built a nice 355 as I didn't want to touch the original motor. Still runs early heads etc so it looks original.Crankshaft Rebuilders crank was used

26-01-17, 01:19 PM
Good to see another one coming back to her former glory.

Re the engine rebuild there is only 1 options and as the others have said you need to go a stroker. You can build a mild set up which can still run the std inlet and carby and you wouldn't have any idea what was in her unless you pulled it apart.

If you didn't want to go 355 (where you need to relieve the block) you can also go a ? 330 or something like that, but a 355 is how I went.

Nice to see another resto. Keep the pics coming.

Getting to the point of no return getting ready to pull the engine out to paint the bay at the same time as the rest of the car

Engine out bit of an oil leak but all original never been out of the car before

Engine bay not too bad should clean up easy

Motor ready to go off to the engine shop for a rebuild I am using Pat Purcell to build the motor.
can anybody let me know is the oil cap chrome on these cars, my is not chrome but all other photos i can see they are chrome. If it should be chrome I will send it off with the rockers to get chromed.

27-02-17, 04:19 PM
Oil cap should be chrome, I wouldn't go a stoker on a homolagation special just a nice cam maybe bump up the compression race team air tray and twin cat exhaust.

04-03-17, 08:04 AM
Thanks for the reply boy racer I will get the oil cap done in chrome.
Next question I am close to painting I have two questions
1: are the blackout painted in high gloss or satin when I stripped the car they looks like high gloss but am not sure
2: What paint code or colour is the black from factory
Any help would be greatly appreciated

06-03-17, 07:27 PM
Pretty sure black is gloss, I believe there is a GM black, would check to see if holden or a paint supplier can confirm.

07-03-17, 07:18 PM
agreed, it's gloss black.

Yes, keep it as a 304, otherwise you'll break other stuff.

Kick the compression up from the woeful 8.5 to early 10s, around 10.3, and a cam of 240 or so @ .050.

Before, during and after the valve seats is where to spend time with the porting tools.

I think its fair to say after its painted your on the down hill slope. But the hard work has only just started.

I have found its much easier to take one apart but a lot harder to put it back together.

And you have to look at it one nut and one bolt at a time.

Good luck and take your time, I think your doing an amazing job.

All that rubbing was worth it very very straight and thanks my mate Adam no orange peel straight off the gun. This is the first car Adam has painted hard to believe. He owns a company called Pay's Restoration think he has a page on facebook, does some of the best work I have seen. Thanks again for the comments now to pull the front end out and get that sorted and put the jigsaw back together again
